Center for Reproduction at Carolinas Medical Center
The Women's Institute at Carolinas Medical Center is staffed by trained specialists in reproductive endocrinology, infertility and andrology. Our team of experts bring their backgrounds, knowledge and experiences together to provide the best possible care for each patient.

The physicians of Carolinas Medical Center's (CMC) Women's Institute are members of CMC's division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility - a specialized staff of andrologists and embryologists, certified infertility nurses and patient care coordinators qualified to meet your unique needs.

Wallace C. Nunley, Jr., MD
Director, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
Carolinas Medicine Center
Dr. Nunley is subspecialty board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and is the Chairman/Program Director in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Carolinas Medical Center. He attended the University of Virginia School of Medicine and performed his residency training at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dr. Nunley is an active member of the American Fertility Society, Society of Reproductive Endocrinologists, South Atlantic Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Medical Society of Virginia, North Carolina Medical Society, Society of Reproductive Surgeons, North Carolina Obstetrical and Gynecological Society, North American Menopause Society and the Southeastern Reproductive Biology Association. He has published a number of papers in leading medical journals, and lectured throughout the country on Obstetrical and Gynecological issues. His special interests include endometriosis, reconstructive surgery, and hormone replacement therapy.

Paul B. Marshburn, MD
Director, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
Dr. Marshburn is subspecialty board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology. Previously he was Director of the In vitro fertilization (IVF) program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He currently is the Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He attended Duke University and the Emory University Graduate School and School of Medicine. Dr. Marshburn performed his residency training at Duke University Medical Center, and received his fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Marshburn is an active member in a number of state, regional and national medical societies involved with reproductive medicine including the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, Society of Reproductive Endocrinologists and Society for Gynecologic Investigation. He has published a number of papers in leading medical journals. His current research interests include endometrial and embryonic responses during implantation and spermatozoal characteristics related to normal ovum fertilization.

His major clinical interests include assisted reproductive technology, endometriosis, advanced laparoscopy and microsurgery.

Bradley S. Hurst, MD
Director, Assisted Reproduction Program
Associate Director, Reproductive Endocrinology
Dr. Hurst is subspecialty board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and has been the director of the Assisted Reproduction Program and associate director of the Reproductive Endocrinology Program at Carolinas Medical Center since 1999. He attended the University of Texas Medical School in Houston and performed his residency at Duke University Medical Center and a fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

For eight years, Dr. Hurst was the director of Assisted Reproduction at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dr. Hurst is an active member of national medical societies, including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology and the Society of Reproductive Surgeons. He has published more than 60 articles in leading medical journals and textbooks. He has written women's health columns for the Charlotte Observer, Denver Rocky Mountain News, and Atlanta Journal-Constitution. His awards include life membership in Who's Who in Medicine and Best Doctor in America.

Dr. Hurst's special interests are in vitro fertilization, infertility, minimally invasive surgery and issues dealing with the transition to menopause.

Michelle L. Matthews, MD
Assistant Director, Program for Assisted Reproductive Technology
Associate Director, Reproductive Endocrinology
Dr. Matthews is Assistant Director of the program for Assisted Reproductive Technology at Carolinas Medical Center. She is subspecialty trained and board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Dr. Matthews attended Miami University and Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. She completed her residency training at Summa Health Systems and her fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at Rush-Presbyterian St. Lukes Medical Center. She has won several achievement awards including the Chicago Association of Reproductive Endocrinologists Investigator Competition Award, the Summa Health System Louis M. Walker, MD Award for Resident Achievement in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology National Faculty Award. She is an active member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Medical Association, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, and the Society of Reproductive Endocrinologists. She has published numerous articles in lead medical journals.

Dr. Matthews has research interests in the effects of environmental toxins on reproduction and clinical interests including in vitro fertilization, endometriosis, microsurgery, laparoscopy and hysteroscopy.

Rebecca S. Usadi, MD
Assistant Director of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
Dr. Usadi graduated with honors from Rutgers University and then went to Duke University School of Medicine to earn her medical degree. She completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia. She then returned to North Carolina to pursue a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was on faculty for three years at Greenville Hospital University Medical Center as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of South Carolina School of Medicine where she enjoyed a busy clinical practice in reproductive medicine and infertility as well as teaching residents and medical students. She is currently a recipient of the 2005 Clinical Research/Reproductive Scientist Training scholarship, a joint program of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) at Duke University and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). She is an active member of the Patient Education Committee at ASRM. Her interests include infertility, in vitro fertilization, advanced laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Mary Anne Wedell, RNC
In vitro fertilization (IVF) Nurse Coordinator
Mary Anne Wedell brings 12 years of infertility experience to the IVF team. Mary Anne graduated with honors from Mercy College in 1978. She has worked in various areas of women's medicine, including insemination coordinator and OB-Gyn nursing supervisor while at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. She worked as an infertility nurse specialist and IVF satellite coordinator for three years while in Harrisburg, PA. She has published various articles on infertility and endometriosis. Mary Anne is a member of the American Fertility Society and is certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility nursing. She has been a speaker for Serono Symposia, the Charlotte Area Health Education Center, the Family Planning Council and the CMHA speaker's Bureau. Mary Anne will be integrally involved in your patient management, acting as a liaison between you and your physician. Her primary objective is to treat you with compassion and caring.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) Nurse Coordinator
Libby Boatwright has been involved in many areas of women's health care since 1968. She began her nursing career in labor and delivery at Carolinas Medical Center. Libby then went on to work as a nurse at Charlotte OB-GYN Associates and for the last 18 years has served as an infertility nurse and IVF Coordinator. She was a member of the IVF team responsible for the first successful IVF pregnancy in Charlotte.

Libby received her education at Central Piedmont Community College and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Libby has been involved in patient education, contributed to various published articles on infertility, and also is an instructor in emergency medical technician training in areas relating to women's healthcare. She was appointed to the Mecklenburg County Health Advisory Council.

Libby will work with your physicians and the entire team to provide you with quality care. Treating patients with respect and compassion is very important to her.

Margaret Papadakis, PhD
Andrologist-Embryologist for Assisted Reproduction
Dr. Margaret Papadakis is acting director of the Embryology Laboratory at Carolinas Medical Center. Previoulsy, Dr. Papadakis held the positions of Assistant Professor and Director of the Assisted Reproductive Technologies Laboratories at the University of Miami. She received a B.S, degree in Animal Science from the University of Vermont and a M.S. degree in Reproductive Biology from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Papadakis then completed her PhD and three years of postdoctoral training at Penn State University. Dr. Papadakis has completed all examinations necessary for the American Board of Bioanalysis certification as a high complexity laboratory director. She is also a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Society for the Study of Reproduction. Dr. Papadakis has published articles in a variety of well-known journals and has been active in reproductive biology research since 1982.

Her research interests include optimization of in vitro culture and cryopreservation of games and embryos, oviductal physiology and sperm membrane biochemistry.

The laboratory personnel assist with all andrology and embryology procedures.
