About Our Practice
Since its creation in 1995, McKay Urology has come to be recognized as a regional center of excellence in urology through the promotion of the highest standards of clinical practice, education and research. In order to focus its expertise, McKay Urology is a sub-specialty practice. In addition, McKay Department of Urology has been named one of the top fifty urology departments in the country by U.S. News & World Report, and is the first department in the Charlotte region ever to be placed on any top fifty list by this publication.

All of McKay's physicians are board certified by the American Board of Urology and are fellows in the American College of Surgeons. In addition, they hold clinical professorships from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and teach senior UNC-CH urologic residents on a daily basis while they are on rotation with the CMC faculty. The physicians at McKay Urology combine expertise in diagnosis, treatment, and state-of-the-art technology with a dedication to education and research. Working with a caring, personable staff, McKay Urology offers highly personalized care and a full range of treatment and surgical options for most major urologic conditions.

History
McKay Urology is named in memory of Hamilton W. McKay, MD, and Robert W. McKay, MD, brothers who pioneered the specialty of urology in Charlotte and the Southeast. Dr. Hamilton McKay began practicing urology in 1913; Dr. Robert McKay joined him in 1928. Their practice set a standard for urologic care in the region, and they were known nationally for their scientific publications and leadership in professional organizations.

Dr. Hamilton McKay was a physician leader in the founding of Charlotte Memorial Hospital, the predecessor to Carolinas Medical Center, in 1940. Through the efforts of both McKays, a residency program for urologic training was then established at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. The McKays' dedication to excellent patient care, teaching and scholarly research helped shape that institution into the medical center it is today.

Following the passing of both McKay brothers in 1967, the urologic education department at Charlotte Memorial waned, and eventually it was closed. A new department of urology dedicated to clinical care, research, and education was created in 1995 and named in honor of the McKays. Concurrent with the creation of McKay Urology, Carolinas Medical Center partnered with UNC-Chapel Hill to jointly educate resident physicians training in urology. Today, we at McKay Urology aspire to uphold the high standards of urologic care, teaching, and scholarship begun here by the McKays.
