CAROLINAS MEDICAL CENTER'S F.H. "SAMMY" Ross, Jr. CENTER

Renamed in 2001 in honor of the late F.H. "Sammy" Ross Jr., Carolinas Medical Center's (CMC) F.H. "Sammy" Ross, Jr. Center and its affiliated service, the Hemby Pediatric Trauma Institute, provides specialized trauma care to seriously injured adults and children throughout the Carolinas.

As the designated Level One trauma center for the region, CMC's F.H. "Sammy" Ross, Jr. Center is the referral destination for acute trauma cases occurring in Mecklenburg and the 14 surrounding counties in North and South Carolina. Each year the Trauma Center admits more than 1,500 patients as a result of major traumas, such as motor vehicle crashes, falls or industrial accidents. Thousands of less threatening injuries are treated annually at Carolinas Medical Center's Emergency Room.

CMC's F.H. "Sammy" Ross, Jr. Center is fully accredited by the American College of Surgeons and maintains the lofty standards and a wide range of services required to be considered among the nation's elite hospitals rendering trauma care.

The trauma programs and services associated with CMC benefit richly from access to a full spectrum of supporting services, including: a broad array of emergency transport (mobile intensive care ambulances, medical helicopters and fixed wing aircraft); state-of-the-art emergency care and critical care units; and, an adjacent rehabilitation hospital (Carolinas Rehabilitation). Physical facilities include: a specialized Emergency Department with five areas equipped for resuscitation; a designated trauma operating room; and a 10-bed trauma intensive care unit.

The Center for Prehospital Medicine at CMC further extends the range of the F.H. "Sammy" Ross, Jr. Center to allow its faculty to contribute their expertise to the training and development of emergency medical response teams throughout the region.
