CAROLINAS MOBILE DENTISTRY

Carolinas Mobile Dentistry's mission is to improve access to dental care for seniors in communal living who have difficulty receiving care in private dental offices due to their medical, physical and/or mental condition. Founded in 1997 as a collaborative pilot project between Carolinas Health Foundation, the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust and the North Carolina Dental Society.

Carolinas Mobile Dentistry is a fully mobile state-of-the-art dental office staffed by a geriatric dentist, dental hygienist, and dental assistants providing oral hygiene and dental care to nursing facilities, assisted living and retirement communities in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Union and Gaston Counties.

Carolinas Mobile Dentistry is the recipient of the 2001 American Dental Association Geriatric Oral Health Care Award for Special Needs Dentistry.

 QUICK FACTS

Older adults often pose special dental challenges. For example, medications and nutritional supplements can contain large amounts of sugar, which can cause tooth decay. Dry mouth, a frequent side effect of radiation therapy and certain medications, can hasten decay. Some patients require antibiotics before treatment; others take blood thinners, which make them susceptible to bleeding during treatment.
