PEDIATRIC REHABILITATION PAVILION
In 1996 Food Lion committed $1 million to develop a unique facility to benefit physically challenged
children from throughout the region. This donation represented the largest single gift ever made by Food
Lion and is the largest corporate gift ever received by a Carolinas HealthCare System facility.
For the first time all pediatric rehabilitation programs and services offered by Carolinas HealthCare are together.
Staffing these programs is a team of pediatric professionals, including physiatrists (doctors who specialize in
rehabilitation); rehab nurses; neuropsychologists; physical, occupational and speech therapists; recreational
specialists and more.
The Pavilion also brings together the pediatric unit, a new indoor therapeutic recreation area - including
a specially designed gymnasium and an indoor playground.
Designed as a neighborhood, the Pavilion is meant to encourage children's creative imaginations and
to provide the opportunity for therapy and play. The facility, which includes a main street with
colorful buildings and a central playground, features the following:
- The Mess Hall, where children can develop cognitive and motor skills through activities like arts and crafts.
- A Library, a transition school for children who may need additional assistance before they return to their regular schools.
- The Boom Boom Room, complete with age appropriate toys and mirrors; a safe place for toddlers to explore and develop their cognitive, motor and social skills.
- An Arcade, a fun gathering place for adolescents and teens; includes video and table top games.
The Pavilion will also serve as a base for innovative community-oriented adaptive sports and recreational programs. For more information about the Pediatric Pavilion at Carolinas Rehabilitation, please call 1-800-634-2256 or email.
