POST-CONCUSSIVE CLINIC
Traumatic brain injuries affect two million Americans every year. The injuries can result from motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, falls or other events, which may not involve a direct blow to the head.
A large number of these people sustain a mild traumatic brain injury, also known as a concussion. Patients with a concussion may have significant persistent symptoms commonly known as post-concussive syndrome.
Fortunately, most people with mild traumatic brain injuries improve without medical attention. However, others may have a slow recovery period and the symptoms may negatively impact their professional and private lives.
Carolinas Rehabilitation offers the Post-Concussive Clinic to serve patients with this type
of injury. It addresses the patient's ongoing symptoms, provides appropriate medical and therapeutic interventions,
and restores the patient to his or her pre-injury social and work level. The clinic is directed by David Wiercisiewski, M.D., and staffed by physicians who are members of Neuroscience and Spine Institute.
The Post-Concussive Clinic offers a comprehensive medical evaluation - emphasizing a team approach to patient
care led by a Carolinas Rehabilitation physician specializing in traumatic braing injury. Team memebers specialize in:
- Neuropsychology/Neuropsychological testing
- Speech and language therapy
- Cognitive education
- Psychology
- Occupational therapy
- Physical therapy
- Social work counseling
- Vocational rehabilitation services
- Functional balance evaluation and retraining
