 QUICK FACTS
ACS's recommendations for early detection of cancer:

A cancer-related check-up is recommended every 3 years for people aged 20-40 and every year for people 40 and older.

All women should perform monthly breast self-examinations.

Women ages 20-39 should have a clinical breast exam by a healthcare professional every 3 years.

Women age 40 and older should have a mammogram and clinical breast exam by a healthcare professional each year.

All women who are or have been sexually active or who are 18 and older should have an annual Pap test and pelvic examination.

Beginning at age 50, men who have a life expectancy of at least 10 years and younger men who are at high risk should be checked for prostate cancer each year.
Seven warning signs of pediatric cancer:
Because pediatric cancers differ so greatly from adult cancers, the helpful, highly publicized "seven warning signs" of adult cancer don't apply to children. But pediatric cancers do send some signals that parents can be aware of:

A persistent limp.

Pale or anemic appearance.

Increased bruising.

Unexplained weight gain.

Abdominal mass or swelling.

Persistent headache and/or vomiting upon awakening.
