Carolinas Epilepsy Center offers the most comprehensive services in the region for diagnosing and treating epilepsy. The center has the most sophisticated technology on site, and the multidisciplinary team of medical specialists and health professionals uses a personal, individualized approach that puts the patient at the center of all efforts.

The Team
Carolinas Epilepsy Center team represents the collaboration of professionals who specialize in the care and treatment of epilepsy. They include adult and pediatric neurologists, board certified in epilepsy, clinical nurse specialist, registered EEG technologist, neurosurgeons specializing in adult and pediatric epilepsy surgery, neuroradiologists, nuclear medicine specialist, medical social workers, neuropsychologists and clinical nutritionist.

Coordinated care
Highlights of Carolinas Epilepsy Center include:

  • Epilepsy Monitoring Unit - Allows for continuous video/EEG monitoring 24 hours a day.
  • Epilepsy Clinic - Provides intensive treatment management for difficult to control seizures or complicated seizure patterns.
  • Clinical trials - Give patients access to new drugs to control seizures.
  • Ketogenic Diet Program for children - Provides reduction or control of seizures through a carefully balanced diet of fats, restricted carbohydrates and protein.
  • Surgical expertise - Provides patients yet another advanced treatment option. Carolinas Epilepsy Center's surgery program began in 1988. Experienced neurosurgeons work with the epilepsy team to determine which patients may benefit from surgical procedures.

Patients can have the following specialty procedures performed on site:

  • MRI, PET, SPECT and CT scans
  • WADA testing
  • Intracranial electrode monitoring
  • Brain mapping
  • Frameless and gram-based sterotactic surgical techniques
