CAROLINA MEDICAL CENTER'S HEMBY PEDIATRIC TRAUMA INSTITUTE

It is a startling fact: trauma kills more children than all other diseases combined. A staggering 55 percent of all childhood deaths in the United States are due to trauma. Each year, approximately 15,000 children die and another 100,000 are permanently disabled.

To improve trauma care for children in the region, The Hemby Pediatric Trauma Institute and Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) joined together to create a regional system combining transportation, treatment and rehabilitation for pediatric trauma victims. The services of CMC's Hemby Pediatric Trauma Institute are available to healthcare providers and patients throughout the Carolinas 24 hours a day.

Carolinas Medical Center's facilities include a specialized Emergency Department with five resuscitation areas, a designated trauma care unit, and all the necessary specialized staff to assess, diagnose, and treat life-threatening injuries. Additional services are available such as:

  • Trauma Surgery
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Pediatric Critical Care
  • Neurosurgery
  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Pediatric Rehabilitation
  • Radiology
  • Anesthesiology
If a patient requires rapid transfer to the Level I Trauma Center at CMC, MedCenter Air's helicopter or critical care rround vehicle may be the best means of transport. The critical care transport service is staffed at all times by healthcare professionals who have advanced training in trauma, critical care and flight physiology. The transport crew is in contact with CMC physicians at all times. The transport vehicles have advanced monitoring equipment. Any changes in a patient's condition can be monitored and qualified trauma personnel respond while in flight.
 QUICK FACTS

Each year thousands of students participate in CMC's Hemby Pediatric Trauma Institute's THINK FIRST injury prevention program.

Special car seats, restraint vests and infant car beds are given to children with special needs so they can travel safely restrained. The Special Car Seat Program is financially supported by CMC's Hemby Pediatric Trauma Institute and administered by Carolinas Medical Center's Child Life Program.
