Roper Hospital was founded in 1850 as the first community hospital in the Carolinas. In 1829, Colonel Thomas Roper, a former mayor of Charleston, left $30,000 to the physicians of the Medical Society of South Carolina whose mission was to "treat the sick without regard to complexion, religion or nation." With this gift, the Medical Society established Roper Hospital.
