INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY

We are thrilled that you have decided to visit with us, and that you have chosen a career in Internal Medicine. We hope that our site answers every question that you have - we are eager to show off our program!

Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide an excellent inpatient and ambulatory internal medicine training experience. With our balance of autonomy in patient care, one-on-one faculty/resident teaching, and excellent espirit-de-corps, we hope to provide an ideal environment for you.

Our 36 residents come from all over the country, from Florida to Washington, and represent 22 outstanding US medical schools! We offer the following positions:

  • 10 categorical positions / year
  • 6 preliminary positions / year
  • Optional 4th year as Chief Resident

Our house officers are experienced in the management of acutely ill, multi-system afflicted patients common in urban centers, as well as those patients typically referred to tertiary institutions for their "esoteric" diseases. Each house officer, even at the lowest level, is given as much responsibility as he or she can handle. This is balanced by full-time faculty backup that is in place for prompt consultation.

  • We also offer a comprehensive daily educational curriculum
  • Services strongly emphasize one-on-one education
  • Ample time to read
  • Our first-time pass rate on the American Board of Internal Medicine [ABIM] exam is over 97 percent for the last 30 years
  • Our ABIM pass rate is over 99 percent from 1996-2006 - during this time period, 110 of 111 residents passed the ABIM exam on the first attempt

We also strive to maintain a balance between professional and personal lives. We feel very strongly that house officers that are fulfilled in their professional career will be better suited to enjoy all that life outside the hospital has to offer! Your future life will be all about career/life balances - so we start educating you in the process during your training.

  • On average, interns have 5 months / year on our consult and elective services without call
  • On average, upper levels have 6-7 months / year without call

Yes, there will be busy times; but we feel strongly that they will be well balanced by periods when you have the time to read, spend time with your family and friends, and enjoy the wonderful city of Charlotte and all it has to offer!
